Lousiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival
July 3rd, 2009
If you didn’t make it to New Orleans this weekend for the Essence music fest, you might want to schedule a trip for September. Why? Because besides the usual goings-on, a mere hour and a half from the city, something rather delicious is happening. The Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum festival to be specific. We know, strange combination of things to celebrate, but the origins of the festival lie in celebrating the two main industries of Morgan City, Louisiana. A Shrimp and Petroleum festival means several things, not many of which we’re super excited about: a water parade that highlights shrimp boats, a 5k run/walk, and a golf tournament. Spare us: if we’re driving down (and we refuse to stay overnight, especially with Morgan City’s lack of decent hotels, and the existence of something called the Plantation Inn), we want to eat seafood, and lots of it. That, happily, won’t be a problem. The festival boasts “home style Cajun cooking”, including jambalaya, gumbo, crayfish and of course, shrimp. Shrimp cooked every way you can imagine, and more ways that you can’t. Even a shrimp cooking contest. The result, we think, is a day trip we won’t soon forget, and hopefully not a case of iodine poisoning. Kidding. Check out the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival site to learn more.
