Viva La Hova

October 27th, 2008

Remember all that back and forth on Kanye’s “Big Brother” about songs with Coldplay?  We didn’t really get it, though we do love “Homecoming” on Graduation and are pretty big fans of “Beach Chair”, Jay-Z’s collaboration with Chris Martin of Coldplay on Kingdom Come.  But really, why was Kanye so peeved that he and Jay-Z collaborated with the same group?  Sure, Coldplay is to rock as Jay-Z is to hip hop and ‘Ye can be a bit of an egomaniac.  Maybe he just didn’t like Hova stealing his shine.  Wrong.  Viva La Hova just reiterates that Kanye knew something we didn’t.  That Coldplay and hip-hop is kind of like pineapple on pizza: it doesn’t necessarily sound good, but once you try it, you’ll think otherwise.  So Mick Boogie and Terry Urban did what any good DJs should do, and put together a genre-crossing  mixtape that is certain to replace at least half of the ‘25 most played’ on your iPod.  Its all Jay-Z and Coldplay, with tracks by 9th Wonder, The Kickdrums, Mick Boogie, Terry Urban and more.  While the producers worked on the tracks, Mick Boogie and Terry Urban scoured any and all Jay-Z verses they had access to, and compiled this album from scratch.   Jay-Z had only five words to say once he listened to the final version: “This shit is really good”.  We have two more that will probably make you almost as happy as he was: Its free.  Available for free download at midnight tonight at Vivalahova.com.
