Miss Landmine
August 19th, 2008
When you have a bad day, remember this post. Please don’t, after considering realities like the ones we’re about to share, ever say the customary “my life sucks” when considering yours. Unless, of course, your life sucks. But chances are, if you’re taking the time to BupGrade your cultural capital right now, you’re in better shape than these women. Try losing a limb in a landmine. We at BupGrade aren’t typically excited by pageants, but we feel differently about this one. Miss Landmine, held in Angola last year, and slated for Cambodia next year, celebrates women who have lost limbs in landmines. And when all the strutting and canned answers end, two women get a brand-new, shiny, state-of-the-art prosthetic. Sure, the limb only helps one woman a year in the physical sense, but the acknowledgement and commemoration of such disabled women gives hopes to many. With thousands of land-mine amputees in Angola, one of the most mined countries in the world, the public awareness and mass self-esteem boost may be well worth it. Why should you care? Because if you don’t already realize it, your life situation is largely happenstance, and we’re positive that you’d want someone as blessed as you to care if the roles were reversed. So visit the site, take a moment, and help. Visit Miss Landmine to learn more information, or buy a t-shirt (and donate at the same time) (photo credit).
