Free Rice
August 11th, 2008
Yumm, rice. We love it. Fried, steamed, jollof-ed or mixed with West Indian peas or Mexican beans. We also love BupGrading our vocabulary and helping the needy. Which is why we love FreeRice, a free online vocabulary game that rewards correct answers with donations of rice to the hungry all around the world. While you’re wasting your talent at work, put all those brains to good use. You’ll be given a word. When you define it correctly, a sponsor will pay for 20 grains of rice to be distributed by the UN World Food program, the world’s largest food assistance program, that serves over 75 countries. For you ultra competitive types, have no fear. FreeRice keeps track of your vocabulary score, which increases quickly as you get words correct, then starts to dip as you answer incorrectly. You can tailor FreeRice to your personal preference: keep track of how many grains of rice you earn, and set starting vocabulary levels. So we know you’re thinking, “20 grains of rice? That’s like a teaspoon”. You’re right, it is. But defining a word? That’s like five seconds of your life. And if you tell 5 people about the game, chances are you’ll be feeding a hungry mother in West Africa, a starving child in Myanmar or a whole family in Uganda. In case you doubt the effectiveness of lil’ old you playing an internet game, consider this: in the first five months, FreeRice users amassed enough rice to feed a million people. Now that’s food for thought. Visit www.freerice.com for more information, or to play (photo).
